About the Site

Editor and Designer

The Elizabethan Sumptuary Statutes are transcribed and edited for the World Wide Web by Maggie Secara, editor of Life in Elizabethan England: A Compendium of Common Knowledge 1558-1603.

The site is designed by Paula Kate Marmor, designer of Renaissance and editor of Legends.

Here are brief bios of the editor and designer, at the Compendium.

The Tools

The fonts used for the Elizabethan Sumptuary Statutes title are John Speed and John Speed Ornaments, period calligraphic fonts based on John Speed's Atlas of 1612, The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, from The Scriptorium, and Agfa Monotype Francesca Gothic. Interior page titles are set in Francesca Gothic. Individual letters and swashes were hand-edited and gradient-filled in Paint Shop Pro.

These pages were hand-crafted in Allaire's HomeSite for Windows; Microsoft Word dcouments output as HTML were cleaned up using HTML Tidy, part of HTML-Kit.
